With the number of internet-savvy, mobile-device carriers continuing to rise in every part of society, and more people begin to simply rely on their phones and tablets to surf rather than their laptops, Google has been preparing to launch a new algorithm that will give a distinct advantage in searches to those sites that are “mobile-friendly”. And the date of the launch is approaching quickly, if you haven’t heard. In fact, it’s less than two weeks from today, on Tuesday, April 21.

Making your website mobile friendly

That is when you’ll want to try and have your website optimized for mobile-device access, in order to not fall behind in the search engine game. If you’re not sure about where your site currently sits in that situation, Google can help you out. They have offered their own Mobile-Friendly Test, which can help you determine the compatibility of your site. In addition, you can check out the Mobile Usability Report in Webmaster Tools to ensure your site is found without errors.

Making this update to your website – if you haven’t already done so – will be critical to keep up with the ever-changing times. Word from the Silicon Valley is that this is not just another run-of-the mill update. It is expected to have a bigger impact than either of the first three algorithm updates Google has launched in the past, and apparently will completely change how we look at SEO and SEM sites.

Websites without mobile-friendly qualities will significantly drop in search rankings, and the entire deck will be shuffled.

Google is extremely motivated to provide the highest quality user experience on the web, and this update is in line with doing so. To get up to speed, you may need to host a separate, mobile-friendly version or just implement a responsive design, just to be compatible with all devices. You should also check your crawlability by verifying that Google’s crawlers are able to see your site on a mobile device. And lastly, check to make sure that every page on your site is mobile-ready. If you’re website isn’t on board with this check list, you might miss the train entirely.
